Chaoyang to Open 60 New Vegetable Markets in 2018

Making a homecooked meal just got a lot better for residents of Chaoyang as the city announced it will open 60 new local wet markets this year.

As part of a year-long initiative to improve local retail services, Chaoyang will also create 180 new neighborhood service outlets like breakfast nooks as well as five new large retail spaces measuring over 1,000sqm each.

Meanwhile, a number of existing Chaoyang wet markets will be upgraded with additional retail space.

The initiative also has plans to raise the standard of local services by creating no less than five new "lifestyle service" streets to serve as models as well as the creation of 10 hybrid "community-business" complexes.

Chaoyang will also open some 100 new convenience stores over the new year as part of a plan that will open 3,000 new convenience stores across Beijing by 2020.

In related news, more options for fresh produce are also coming in the form of 30 new Hema Markets said to open before the end of 2018, bringing with it promises of home delivery in less than 30 minutes.

The good news comes at a time when Chaoyang residents already experience some of the best service in Beijing.

With 1,282 fresh markets spread out over 210,340sqm of floor space, Chaoyang residents have more grocery stores than the rest of the city (60sqm/1,000 residents compared with the city average of 50/1,000).

But, as we saw in 2017, Beijing isn't finished with tearing down its buildings. Chaoyang will shut down and demolish 34 more stores this year.
